AUTUMN AFTER DARK: T-SHIRTS, TECHNOLOGY & THE NEXT ADVENTURE
AUTUMN AFTER DARK: T-SHIRTS, TECHNOLOGY & THE NEXT ADVENTURE
As festival season winds down, the nights get darker… and Cover Up Tops gets ready for what comes next.
Summer is beginning to disappear, the last festivals and outdoor events are winding down, and the evenings are starting to feel a little different.
But if you're anything like me, the end of summer doesn't mean the fun stops.
It just changes.
Club nights start ramping up.
Halloween is getting closer.
The nights get darker.
Closing parties are still going strong.
And suddenly, all those sci-fi, cyberpunk and retro ideas seem to fit the season rather nicely.
So, welcome to Autumn After Dark.
And there's plenty happening at Cover Up Tops.
NEW COVER UP TOPS VIDEOS ARE LIVE!
I've been putting a lot of work into creating some new social media videos recently, experimenting with different styles, combinations of designs and ways of presenting the T-shirts.
The new videos are now live across:
TikTok
Instagram
YouTube
I've been particularly pleased with some of the new formats I've been trying, and I'm continuing to look at what makes people stop scrolling, look twice and hopefully visit the website.
It's all part of the learning process of building an independent brand.
Create → test → learn → improve → repeat.
If you see one of the new videos, I'd really appreciate a like, comment or share. Every interaction helps Cover Up Tops reach someone new.
THREE T-SHIRT FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW
We've covered a lot of T-shirt history in previous newsletters, so here are three different facts for this edition.
1. The word “T-shirt” comes from its shape
The name is wonderfully simple.
When laid flat, the body and sleeves create a shape resembling the letter T.
No complicated fashion terminology. Just:
T + shirt = T-shirt.
Sometimes the obvious answer really is the right one!
2. The fabric construction can dramatically change how a tee feels
Two T-shirts can look almost identical but feel completely different because of the way their fabric is knitted, the yarn used and the weight of the material.
That's why factors such as cotton type, fabric weight and construction can make a noticeable difference to softness, drape, durability and overall feel.
3. T-shirts became a canvas for identity
What makes the modern graphic tee so interesting isn't simply the printing.
It's what the wearer chooses to communicate.
A T-shirt can tell people you're into a band, film, football team, hobby, political cause, joke, subculture, game, artwork or simply a particular aesthetic.
Essentially:
Your wardrobe can become part of your personality.
And that's a big part of what I love about creating Cover Up Tops.
As the festivals wind down, clubbing season starts to take on a different atmosphere.
Dark evenings.
Neon lights.
Late nights.
Music.
DJs.
Dancing.
And the inevitable:
“How is it 4am already?”
My own experience of DJing and club culture has been a big influence on some of the Cover Up Tops designs, particularly the festival, electronic music, nightlife and retro-synth-inspired collections.
And with Halloween approaching, the darker side of the brand has plenty of room to come out too.
Horror
UFOs
Cyberpunk
Space
Robots
Neon cities
The weird and wonderful
Autumn might be darker.
The designs don't have to be.
SCI-FI TO WATCH
There's plenty coming up for science-fiction fans.
Vision Quest arrives on Disney+ on 14 October 2026, while Stranger Things: Tales From '85 – Season 2 follows on Netflix on 29 October.
There's also plenty further ahead to keep on the radar.
NEUROMANCER
William Gibson's landmark cyberpunk novel is being adapted into a 10-episode Apple TV series, with a current 2026/27 window.
Hacking, artificial intelligence, digital espionage and dystopian technology?
That one is very Cover Up Tops territory.
BLADE RUNNER 2099
The Blade Runner universe is also returning to television.
Blade Runner 2099 currently has a 2027 window and is set 50 years after Blade Runner 2049.
And if you like your sci-fi with a darker edge, there's plenty more to come.
SPACE & SCIENCE: THE REAL WORLD IS GETTING SCI-FI TOO
Sometimes reality doesn't need much help from Hollywood.
HUBBLE HITS A HUGE MILESTONE
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope completed its 200,000th orbit of Earth on 19 September.
Over its lifetime, Hubble has travelled more than 5 billion miles around our planet and has contributed to more than 1.7 million observations.
Not bad for a telescope that's been working above our heads for decades!
ROMAN SPACE TELESCOPE
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is also getting closer to science operations, with its supporting ground stations now confirmed ready to receive the huge volumes of data expected once science operations begin in early 2027.
And that's particularly exciting because Roman will investigate some of the biggest questions in modern astronomy, including dark energy, dark matter and the formation of galaxies.
